A photographer is booked around a date and a venue, so this is usually the third or fourth thing you confirm. Two decisions carry almost all of the cost: how much of the day you want covered, and what arrives afterwards.

How much of the day you need covering

Coverage and typical Cornwall pricing
CoverageWhat it usually spansTypical price
Ceremony only, 2-3 hrsArrival, the ceremony, group shots£450 - £900
Half day, 5-6 hrsPreparations through to the start of the reception£900 - £1,400
Full day, 9-12 hrsPreparations through to the first dance£1,400 - £2,500

The gap between half and full day is the evening: speeches, the cake, the first dance. If the budget only reaches half a day, decide which end of the day matters more to you before you ask for quotes, because most photographers will move the window rather than shorten it, and a shortlist priced against different windows tells you nothing.

What a package contains, and what is added later

  • The number of edited images, and whether that is a commitment or an estimate.
  • How they arrive - an online gallery, a download, prints, an album - and how long the gallery stays live before it expires.
  • What you are licensed to do with them: printing your own, posting them, and the venue or your other suppliers using them.
  • Travel: whether the whole of Cornwall is inside the fee, or charged beyond a radius.
  • Whether they stay for the booked window regardless of the day overrunning, or charge past it, and at what rate.
  • A visit to the venue beforehand, which is worth more at a coastal site where the light and the wind decide where group shots can happen at all.

Second shooters and engagement shoots

A second shooter covers what one person cannot be in two places for - both partners preparing, or the room while you are outside. Expect it quoted as an addition rather than assumed, commonly £250 to £400 for the day. It earns its place at a large wedding or a site spread across several buildings; at forty guests in one room it usually does not.

An engagement shoot is a short session beforehand, sometimes included in a package. Its real value is not the photographs. It is finding out how the two of you behave in front of that particular person's camera while it still does not matter.

Delivery, turnaround and what happens if they cannot come

Ask when the images arrive and put the answer in the contract. A short preview set within a fortnight and the full gallery in six to ten weeks is a reasonable thing to ask for, and a photographer who will not commit to any date is telling you something. Ask how long they keep the files afterwards: a failed hard drive two years on is the risk nobody thinks to ask about.

Then ask the awkward question - what happens if they are ill, or their car does not make it down the A30. A photographer who has a named replacement, or belongs to an association with a cover network, has an answer ready. Ask what your money does in that situation too, since the two are separate questions and only one of them is usually in the contract.
